After I left college and started to teach, I acquired Lucky from one of the teachers at the school where I was working. He was a pedigree cat and was jet black with bright orange eyes. He really was magnificent. I have never seen such an enormous cat before or since!
As he was such a beauty I decided to see how he would get on at Olympia at the cat show. A family relation, Benny, was living with us at the time and she came with me each year.
Lucky managed to get a silver medal on the first occasion and a highly commended at the second. It was always quite a job to get there as we had to use buses and the London underground. He was no light weight. On the third occasion we got a lighter carrying box for him as we thought that it would be easier to cope with. How wrong we were? We had forgotten just how strong he was and he managed to break out of the box with no trouble at all in the underground train! What a time we had chasing round the compartment to retrieve him! We laugh about it now but at the time we were frantic! You can just imagine how difficult it was after that. It was actually a wasted journey this time as he didn’t want to co-
That was definitely his last trip on the underground and one never to be forgotten!
Sadly I only have a few photos and they are in black and white so you can’t see his beautiful orange eyes.
